We got some good conversation going on how to best structure high school spring league and tournaments, paperwork and fees, and how to better communicate between groups.
1) We will do a high school league and tourney that will be sanctioned through the UPA, which means
all players need to be UPA members ($20 annual membership).
2)
High school league play will consist of creating different groups around the state and having play each week within those groups. All scores will be reported on the UPA’s ScoreReporter function (
http://upa.org/scores/scores.cgi?div=121&page=2) to help give us a better idea for seeding at tournaments.
a. Any team that wishes to be eligible for the state tournament, must play a minimum of 3 different schools within the school year of the tournament and report scores through the UPA.
b. In the Salt Lake Valley, we will have field space reserved each week where schools can play their match ups.
c. Mini-tournaments will be scheduled for two weekends prior to the championship to give teams a chance to play each other.
3) We encourage all high school coaches to be UPA certified coaches:
a. a
UPA Coaching Clinic will be held in the Salt Lake area on February 27, 2010. Anyone interested in learning more about teaching and coaching ultimate is encouraged to attend. More info will come on the Utah High School Ultimate Facebook group site, as well as on
www.ultimateslc.org.
b. An organizer is needed to manage the logistics of securing a location (preferably with access to a gym) and setting up things like coffee, lunch, etc. Organizer gets to attend the clinic and be certified at no cost.
c. Information about registration, cost, etc. can be found at
http://www.upa.org/coaches/coaching4) The U of U team would like to host a clinic to work on basic skills of ultimate and game strategy, pending being able to secure field space. This will likely take place in early March. Info will be posted on UltimateSLC.org and the Facebook site.
5) Uniforms:
a. We are looking for a company who will give a group discount to any high school ultimate team who wants to order jerseys through them.
b. All teams playing in the state tournament must have 2 colors of jersey, usually a light and a dark. All team members should be wearing the same color in any given game.
6) League and State Info:
a. In a better effort to streamline the paperwork and fees for high school players, we will be putting together a packet for each participating school. The packets will include necessary waivers and a fee structure.
b.
The State Championship will be held on
May 21-22, 2010. Mark your calendars!
i. All players in the state tournament must be UPA members.
ii. Due to the potentially high number of teams entering the tournament this year, those teams who have participated in events leading up to the tournament will be given entry preference.
7) Events:
a. Mandatory Meeting for all high schools who wish to compete in the state tournament:
January 30, 2010 at 4:30 pm at the Salt Lake County Ice Center in Murray.
Please RSVP to tarawion@gmail.com to let us know who will attend from your school. b. U of U Clinic (March)
c. Mini Tournaments:
i. April 24, 2010 locations TBD
ii. May 8, 2010 locations TBD
8) Communication
a. All players and coaches participating in high school ultimate should be members of the Utah High School Ultimate group on Facebook and/or the Utah Ultimate community site
www.ultimateSLC.org to receive info and updates.
b. All teams must have up-to-date contact information on the UPA Score Reporter site before the beginning of the season. More information on how to do this will be presented at the meeting.
9) Other
a. We would like to form a
Utah All-Star Team of individual high school players from across the state who are willing to travel to tournaments in other states. Interest in this will be assessed at the January meeting.
