Salt Lake County Ice Center
(behind Best Buy in Murray)
All teams with a representative in attendance will receive preferential entry into the State Tournament! Please RSVP to Tara Wion at tarawion@gmail.com or 801-809-4006 to let us know who all will be at the meeting from your school.
If you are from a school that is more than an hour away from the Salt Lake Valley and won't be able to make the meeting, please email or call Tara Wion at tarawion@gmail.com or 801-809-4006. All high schools throughout the state are eligible to participate in the league and tournament play!
To give you an idea of what we will discussing, please read the notes from our December 14th meeting.
A UPA level 1 coaching certification clinic will be run in Salt Lake City on February 27. The clinic runs approximately 8 am to 4 pm; after completing the clinic and taking an online test, you will be a certified coach!
We are encouraging anyone who would like to coach high school to be certified, because it significantly enhances your legitimacy in the eyes of school administrators. (The UPA runs a background check as part of the process, so that potential concern is also addressed.)
Signup information can be found here. We need eight people signed up in order to run the clinic, so if you would like to attend, please plan on registering as soon as possible to help with planning.
We still need an organizer for the clinic. An organizer secures a location (ideally a classroom with access to a gym-like space for a few hours), sets up food for the day (snacks and some kind of lunch), and handles some minor paperwork. In exchange for these services, you get to attend the clinic free of charge. If you are interested, please contact Meredith Tosta at meredith@hq.upa.org. If you have any questions you can also contact Catherine at ckgreenwald@earthlink.net
Note that anyone coaching a women’s team is eligible for a rebate for the cost of certification. Check here for more information.
Next Saturday, December 12 at 1:00 we are having a meeting that will hopefully bring groups together to help discuss the best route to build ultimate in Utah. Anyone who is interested in being a part of this discussion is welcome to come to the Salt Lake County Ice Center in Murray next Saturday. We will talk about the youth ultimate scene, communication issues between groups of players, as well as selecting a date to host a UPA coaching clinic.
This meeting is open to EVERYONE and we hope everyone who is able will attend to lend their ideas about these issues. This is a state-wide planning meeting, so if their are people from outside the Salt Lake area who wish to be a part of this discussion, please email Tara at tarawion@gmail.com with questions or comments. I know this is the weekend of a Vegas tournament. If you are playing in that tournament and still wish to be involved, again please email Tara.
Utah Ultimate Planning Meeting
Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009
Location: County Ice Center in Murray (behind Best Buy) in the Sports Offices
Time: 1:00pm
OPEN TO EVERYONE
Citizens,
Most every year we the ultimate community organize to adopt a family or two for Sub For Santa. We're given a list of children and their needs (typically a mix of practical and fun items). You buy. We have a wrapping party. We deliver the gifts to the family's home a week before Christmas.
If you are interested in participating this year, then please either reply to this post or send me an e-mail (keithalleman at yahoo) no later than Sunday 11/29. Indicate how many kids you want to sponsor, so I know how many total kids to try to sign up for. I think each kid might be like $50 in spending, so you can say "two kids" if you can handle $100, or you can say "half a kid" if you wanna spend $25, and I'll pair you with someone else to do the shopping.
Ho Ho,
Keith

SLC Ultimate will host the 2009 Northwest Regional Mixed Ultimate Championships, to be held October 3-4 in Park City, Utah. This event will feature 16 of the top mixed teams from Northern California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and of course Utah, who seek to be Northwest region’s representatives at 2009 Ultimate Players Association National Championships to be held in Sarasota, Florida October 29-November 1.
This should be a great tournament to watch -- it’s going to be a battle royale to qualify for Nationals! The Northwest is by far the most competitive region in the Mixed division, producing three out of four semifinalists as well as the winner of the 2008 national championships.
The tournament schedule calls for pool play on Saturday, with elimination games beginning Sunday. Games begin around 9:00 on each day. A final schedule, as well as a list of participants, will be available two weeks before the event – check the event website for updates. WANT TO HELP? Check the website for volunteer opportunities.
